The imagery that Sacred Scripture uses for joy is a return of something lost. In the Old Testament, we see this in the return of the exiles. In the New Testament, Our Lord expresses this in the Parable of the Lost Sheep, the Parable of the Lost Coin, and the Parable of the Prodigal Son. We are the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost prodigal children; and God is searching for us to be found. Only when we are found can there be joy, and we can start this process through prayer.
