Christian formation is not about knowing. It is about being. Formation changes our behavior because it changes our way of being. That change is possible through virtues. Virtues are the formation of our affections and not the ability to oppose them when the moral norm so requires. Virtues allow us to enjoy good actions. Virtues can only be formed by oneself; that's why formation is possible only through freedom.
Four keys are proposed to help in the formation of others: initiative, convictions, perspective and affection.
